HSM Music Teacher, Dr. Whitlock, HSM Principal Mr. Blake Neely

The 6th grade class of Holly Springs Motlow Elementary School is engaging in a unique and heartwarming project. Under the guidance of their inspiring music teacher, Dr. Meisha Whitlock, these young students are weaving together more than just colorful loom bracelets; they are interlacing community spirit and a profound sense of history.

The focus of their project is "Trotting Sally", a local musical figure whose story has resonated deeply with the students. During their studies, they learned that Trotting Sally, a cherished personality in South Carolina's folklore, lies in an unmarked grave. Moved by his story and legacy, the students decided to take action.

Dr. Meisha Whitlock, their music teacher, recalls the moment the idea took root. "They knew that they didn't have the money or resources, and a lot of students started talking about how they make bracelets at home with rubber bands. Then they wanted to sell them for a dollar," she shares.

The students embarked on their journey, creating and selling loom bracelets to fellow students and staff at Holly Springs Motlow Elementary. Each bracelet, made with rubber bands, is not just a piece of jewelry but a symbol of the students' commitment to honoring a historical figure who left an indelible mark on our community.

Their goal is ambitious yet within reach: raising $4,000 for a tombstone to commemorate Trotting Sally. They are over halfway to their goal.  The culmination of their efforts will be a tombstone dedication ceremony, scheduled for May 4th, 2024, at Ridgeville Baptist Church. This event is not just a milestone for the students but a significant occasion for the community, highlighting the impact of youth-led initiatives and the importance of preserving local history.

These students, under Dr. Whitlock's guidance, have shown that even the smallest hands can make a significant difference and that the past, when remembered and honored, can inspire a brighter future.
