Martha Stallard

The Inman community recently gathered to honor the memory and celebrate the legacy of Coach Gene Stallard.  Chapman's Athletic Director, Greg Wilson, and Principal, Matt Davis, led the presentation, commemorating his achievements and impact. This special night marked the remembrance of a beloved coach and his prestigious induction into the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Coach Stallard, who passed away on April 12, 2023, was remembered in a presentation before the beginning of the New Year's Classic Basketball Tournament. Present at the event were members of the Stallard family, including his wife Martha, their children and grandchildren, alongside a gymnasium filled with students, faculty, and alumni of Chapman High School.

Beginning his illustrious career at Lockhart High School, Coach Stallard quickly became a notable figure in high school basketball. His journey led him to Chapman in 1970, where he transformed the Panther basketball program over 22 seasons, becoming a symbol of dedication and excellence.

With an overall impressive record of 421-232, Coach Stallard led the Panthers to four region titles and seven runner-up finishes. In 1990, he led the Panthers as Upper State Champions to Columbia. Esteemed by his peers, Coach Stallard was chosen to be an assistant and, notably, the head coach in the 1987 North/South All-Star game.

Beyond basketball, Coach Stallard's impact extended to coaching golf, boys' and girls' tennis, and assisting with track and football. His contributions to athletics at Chapman testify to his versatile coaching abilities and commitment to student-athletes.

His induction into the Hall of Fame on March 19, 2022, was a fitting acknowledgment of his extraordinary career. Surrounded by his family, Coach Stallard’s achievements were celebrated by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.

After his tenure in Spartanburg One, Coach Stallard continued to inspire young minds as a beloved PE teacher at Inman Elementary. In retirement, he devoted himself to his family, garden, and beloved Tennessee Volunteers. His legacy in education is carried forward by his children, three of whom have pursued careers in education, with two sons actively involved in high school sports.

To honor his memory, the Stallard family has placed a memorial bench at the T.E. Mabry School track for our community to enjoy and remember a man who gave so much to Spartanburg One.
