New CHS AD Mr. Michael Pettit and LHS AD Mr. Alex Smith

Spartanburg School District One is pleased to announce the appointment of two distinguished individuals to the positions of Athletic Director at Chapman and Landrum High Schools, set to begin their roles in the 2024-2025 school year. 

Michael Pettit, who has been serving as the Athletic Director and head baseball coach at Riverside High School since 2019, will be taking the helm as Chapman High School's new Athletic Director. Under his leadership, Riverside High School witnessed a remarkable upturn in its athletic programs, clinching multiple state championships and fostering a culture of success.

Mr. Pettit expressed his enthusiasm about the new role: "Chapman shares a vision of excellence while understanding the importance of athletics in a student-athlete's overall educational experience. I am excited to work with and listen to the coaches, staff, students, teachers, and the administration on what we can do to continue to make Chapman Athletics successful. I want to thank Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith and Principal Matt Davis for this opportunity and look forward to making Chapman the standard in high school athletics. I cannot wait to get started! Go Panthers!"

Landrum High School welcomes Alex Smith as its new Athletic Director. Mr. Smith is the Assistant Athletic Director and Head Women's Basketball Coach at Blue Ridge High School.  He has an impressive track record, having led the basketball team to five region championships and numerous playoff appearances.

Mr. Smith shared his gratitude and vision: "I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Smith, his administrative staff, and Dr. Flynn for the opportunity to be the Athletic Director at Landrum High School. Landrum is a fantastic community with wonderful people and a rich history of athletics. We are excited to take that rich tradition to the next level, where we will relentlessly pursue championship-caliber programs across all platforms. It is our goal to provide student-athletes with the best experience possible while at Landrum High School. Go Cardinals!"

Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith commented on the new appointments, "We are extremely fortunate to welcome Michael Pettit and Alex Smith to our Spartanburg One family.
