Following a unanimous vote by the Spartanburg One Board of Trustees, Mark S. Smith, Ed.D. was named the next superintendent for Spartanburg One Schools during the December 12, 2022 board meeting.
Dr. Mark S. Smith currently serves as the Chief Officer of Student Services, School Safety, and Transportation for Spartanburg School District Six. Prior to this, he served as Principal of Dorman Freshman Campus and Assistant Principal at Dorman High School and Dorman Freshman Campus. He also served as a social studies teacher at Fairforest Middle School. He received a B.A. in Social Studies/Education from Erskine College and an M.Ed from Converse College. He earned an Ed.S. and an Ed.D from South Carolina State University.
The Board of Trustees selected Dr. Smith from three finalists who met with district stakeholders and the board for a final interview last week. Chairman Mr. Billy Cothran, said, “The Spartanburg One Board of Trustees was pleased with the search process, and we look forward to our next steps in the transition.”
Dr. Mark Smith said, “My family and I are beyond excited to join the Spartanburg School District One family. I am eager to help build on an already great foundation of success through academics and extracurricular opportunities. I consider this an opportunity of a lifetime and will prioritize building positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff throughout this transition period."
The board will work with Dr. Smith after the first of the year to develop a timeline for ensuring a smooth transition for the district.
