Each year, the Honorable J. Mark Hayes, II Law Day Essay Contest is held in South Carolina. This is a competition sponsored by the SC Bar Senior Lawyer's Division that is open to all 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grade Public, Private, and Homeschooled Students. For the 2022 competition, students wrote an 1,000 word essay to discuss the role of the Constitution in achieving the goal of producing a "more perfect union" as expressed in the Preamble.
Our LHS students performed very well in this year's competition under the direction of Mrs. Laurin Baker. Jonathan Drake was the statewide winner for the 12th grade division and Marc Baker was the winner for the 10th grade division. In addition, Ella Howard's essay was chosen as one of the ten essays of distinction.
We would like to extend our congratulations to all of the winners and participants of this year’s essay contest. Mrs. Baker and her students will be recognized at a celebration at the Law Day Ceremony on May 5th at the Piedmont Club.
