Retired NYPD Lieutenant John Moran visited Mr. Millwoodβs 6th-period ELA class on Thursday afternoon. As Vice-President and CFO of Heart 9/11, a nonprofit founded after the 9/11 attacks, Lt. Moran shared powerful stories from his 23 years with the NYPD. He was the night tour Platoon Commander at Ground Zero right after the attacks, leading efforts to bring loved ones home while searching through the wreckage. Heart 9/11 works to:
βΆ Respond immediately to natural and man-made disasters
βΆ Rebuild community centers in hard-hit areas to meet grassroots needs
βΆ Recover by building resiliency for individuals, families, and communities
Mr. Millwoodβs students are currently reading Ground Zero by Alan Gratz β a gripping story about a boy trapped in the North Tower on 9/11. Alongside the book, theyβre learning about nonprofits, citizenship, and are preparing for a year-long service project inspired by these lessons.
A big thank you to Lt. Moran for sharing his firsthand experience β connecting history, service, and community in a truly meaningful way! #LiveLearnLandrum #RespectExcellenceDetermination #heart9/11
